The Most Common Heating Repairs

The number one heating problem is a dirty flame sensor. That makes your furnace light up for a second, but then the flames go away. Don’t worry, though. You can clean the sensor with a scotch brite pad or a dishwashing scrubby.

Another problem can be a dirty furnace filter. Thankfully, the fix is super easy. Just replace the filter with a new one.

If your furnace has malfunctioned, it might be a bad inducer motor. That’s the part that whooshes air into the furnace. You can check if it’s getting power with a multimeter. Another key part that can break is the blower motor. It’s the one that blows warm air throughout your home. If it smells like burnt plastic and isn’t whooshing, it might be bad. You can check by feeling it to see if it’s hot.

The last problem could be a bad control board. That’s kind of like the brain of your furnace. If it’s bad, it might not send power to different parts. You can usually troubleshoot a control board with a meter. But that might be a job for an electrician. Otherwise, those pesky little events can leave you shivering. The last thing you want is your heater acting up.
